“I am in a band, but I also place older folks in public schools to be in classrooms with underprivileged kids. We have been musicians long enough to learn how to live on a small income. We have had some great years and not-so-great years. We feel lucky that we found something we love early. Not everyone gets to figure that out. At the end of the day, I know who I want to be. The mistake we made early was not being grateful. We realized we weren’t going to do anything else and committed to music. I have friends who are out of medical school by now, but we made a choice not to do other things or have other things so we can be musicians. If it happens, and we are walking on water one day, it is because we committed to this and appreciate what we have. We wrote “Louisiana” about hurricane Katrina while we were waiting to play a show at the Music Box in Mobile. Our most popular songs are the ones I should take the least credit for. They came to us and not from us. We got out of the way.”
