Graves of the King and Queen of the Gypsies

 

The gypsy king and queen, Emil and Kelly Mitchell, are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Meridian, MS.

Kelly Mitchell, queen of a Romany gypsy clan, died In 1915 giving birth to her 15th child in the gypsy camp in Coatopa near the Mississippi line and King Emil chose to bury his wife in Meridian. According to the local newspaper, more than 20,000 gypsies came to Meridian for the funeral. Emil and other members of the family are also buried there.

There is a myth that if you leave a trinket on her grave, she will come to you in a dream and solve your troubles.

Emril’s sister Flora took the throne after Kelly died. Flora died in Yazoo City, MS, and there was a parade for her there.
